Toy Hutch for the Boys

Cramming two boys into a small bedroom is proving to be a challenge. We finally got the bunk bed situation worked out. I decided it was time to tackle the toy storage situation. Between the bunk beds and the wall there was exactly 31 1/4 inches. I've been scouring Craigslist for a couple of weeks now in search of some kind of bookshelf or cabinet that was 30 inches or less. I finally found one that I thought could work.

This baby was well loved. Broken handle, multiple scratches, but a solid piece so I knew I could fix it's outdated ugliness.

Before:

I started by priming the whole thing with Bin primer. I then spray painted the inner shelves with a bright blue and I spray painted the inside of the cabinet white. Once I achieved the coverage I desired, I roll painted a light gray on the outside. I bought 2 new knobs but kept the latch plate and spray painted both in an oil rubbed bronze. Lastly, I Mod Podged a map of the Western US on the back panel for some added fun.

After:

The hutch fit perfectly between the beds and the wall and it displays the toys nicely and provides storage for the bigger toys underneath. I love how this turned out. Mr. D is pretty impressed as well.

Stay inspired,
